how to change icons in debian

For the default theme in Debian I want to change the icons for a specific group of files. For example I want to change the icons for the file types associated with a .c or .c++ extension. Is that possible under GNOME 3.
I know that this can be done from KDE by changing the icons for the files from its properties. In Gnome I tried this but it changes only the icons for the files which I change. I have thousands of files with extensions .c and I cannot change the icon for all of them. There must be some other way to do it. I also do not want to change the icon theme.
Please help!!!!

what if you take existing icon theme, modify it so it consists of default icons plus your changes, save it as new theme and point gnome to use it.
