How to change 1000 owner

Hi.

I reinstalled Mandriva and then installed already formated hard drives that I can look at all I want. The owner is 1000 and the group is Root. How do I change the owner to me?

Your user number must have been 1000 in the previous system. If you have a new user number on this system just issue the command:

For each file you wish to assign your name as user:
Code:
chown myname filename filename1 filename2 ... filenameX
Only the filename(s) listed will be assigned myname as the user.

For each directory that you wish to assign all files to your username
Code:
chown -R myname directoryname
The directoryname and all file in that directory tree will be assigned myname as user.

Alternatively if you have not already been assigned a username on the new system you can edit the /etc/passwd file to assign your name to user number 1000.

Hi AuroraCA,

Yes your right about the drive coming from another Linux system. I tried doing everything through su Nautilus but just would not work and ended up using terminal and remembered some of my DOS stuff from 12 years ago and chown and I got everything the way I need it.

Thanks for your help,

jan
