How to capture internet streaming file
 

Hey all,

I'm trying to capture a video from a site in Japan. Unfortunately, most of the video downloader tools don't seem to work. Since I'm using Firefox I'm guessing I can't look in my local cache. Is there any way to find it?

They might block you if you're not in Japan. I used to use a proxy server when I was in the US but after a while it didn't work.

If it's not in your local /home/<username>/tmp look in your /tmp it might be lurking in there.

If the file is in neither location, the last option is screen capturing.

You can record the desktop or a portion of it, e.g the window playing the video.

Depending on your CPU, graphics card and system memoery, the results and quality will vary.

• ffmpeg with the x11grab option.

You can find tutorials on youtube.com on the usage of these programs.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. They didn't really work. xvidcap doesn't record sound, and it doesn't let me choose a device other than /dev/pcap or something, and the sound it does record is crappy.

There are commercial products that will do this. I may have to actually look into one. No biggie, I just thought I'd try FOSS first before going commercial.
