You need to make sure GRUB is installed in the partition bootsector of hdd3, if all you get is a blank screen and nothing else then it's either installed on another partition(do you have a separate /boot partition?) or its not installed at all.
Use the GRUB prompt method I described in the previous post and make sure it's install into the partition bootsector before you extract it with 'dd' command.
