Question how to boot to a Linux iso file image when installed onto a USB external hard drive ?

With near the same principle of a Linux live CD or a boot capable Linux USB flash drive install, how can you boot to a Linux iso file image when installed onto a USB external hard drive partition, (fat32 or ext2)? I do know a Linux install can be done to a USB connected external drive, but is there a process to create a boot capable Linux without installing it? And would it save your setting changes like some USB flash sticks do ?

There's a guide at this stage on each distro's site. Follow one of them.

Thumbs up

I did search and found this site; http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ , so it can be done to either a USB flash drive, or onto a USB hard drive. This is called the; Universal Netboot Installer. So that is what I was trying to do, thanks. http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/unetbootin/wiki
