how to boot only with shell


Hi

It may sound stupid but i wanna know that how can i boot only with shell i.e. only CUI no GUI.

Actualy, its due to when i m trying to install nvidia driver through .run file.

Help plz

If you don't want to start X on boot, edit your /etc/inittab file.
Quote:
id:5:initdefault
Replace 5 with 3 in this line.

If you just want to kill the GUI while you install the driver, just open a terminal window and tell the machine to do the same thing that the above post says, but only for the moment. How? Like this:
Code:
telinit 3
To get back to the GUI after you have done this, type
Code:
telinit 5
Runlevel 3 is CLI. Runlevel 5 is GUI. Good luck.

Also if you want to disable it only for one boot and your using lilo you can do this:
when selecting your kernel from the lilo menu add 'single' to the end, or init=/bin/bash.
