How to boot directly into GUI mode with LMDE(Linux Mint Debian Edition)?
Hello to all,
I was trying out LMDE on VB, and at first the GRUB bootloader went directly into GUI mode, but recently it has been booting to console text mode. I tried to change the default boot method bu changing /etc/inittab to put init 5 as the default. But it still boots into console text mode. Also when I type startx into the terminal, nothing happens, no GUI appears... |
What is the output of startx when you enter it from the CLI?

If you still have the LiveCD why not booting in a live session and look at /etc/inittab to see what is the default number selected there then go back to your installation and changed to default.
That is just an idea I have never used LinuxMint nor Debian so Good luck to you. |
Guess could look at /var logs for why the x issue is or seems to not be working.

What have you done since install? I ask because I did similar by unintentionally installing gdm3. Once I reinstalled gdm3 I got the graphical prompt back.

@towheedm
When I did type startx in the CLI it stated that X server could not be found @TroN-0074 The default number in the LiveCD session was 5, but when I had installed the OS on VirtualBox the default had changed to 2, so I changed the file to boot to 5, but it didn't work @273 I did just what you have stated and it worked, thanks |
Hi Jose. I am glad you figured out and is working fine for you again now.
