How to boot diffrent desktops in rh9

My friend brought his laptop to school today, he installed redhat9.0
on it last night. I'm not sure what he did when he installed it,
but it is always loading the linux command prompt. We are both linux
newbies, and we don't know to boot other desktops (like kde or gnome)
from the command prompt. How do you do that?

you mean you want to get a graphical logon, rather than a console? the lowest level way to do this is to edit /etc/inittab and change id:3:initdefault to id:5:initdefault (might not be the exact syntax, but it should be clearly commented and explained within the file) then next book you should get an X login.
