how to allow a normal user to access a tape drive in RHEL 5?

hi all
i am using RHEL 5 and i want to let my users to access the IBM 3592 tape drive to read and write. I can do it with local superuser privileges. I can change the particular drive's permission to 664 to allow all the users to read the tape ( But this is also vanished when i rebooted the workstation) and it does not allow me to give 666 permission.

regards

Kingston

Never used a tape drive, but might try changing owner to one of your users and see if someone other than root owns it, it will allow you to change the permissions.
