how to add or remove a user to a folder for permissions / replace a existing user with another one

Hello Everyone,

Question.....

I created a new folder called "test". On the folder for permissions it has "root" for owner, group "wheel", and "everyone" for read only access. Let's say I wanted to create a new user named "bob", but I wanted to add "bob" to the permissions on the folder "test", how would I do this ?

Also, if I wanted to remove "everyone" from the folder permissions and replace it with "bob", how would I do that ?

Thanks !!!

Hello and welcome to the forum

Just as a suggestion, you might want to change your username using the instructions at the top of the page here, lest your email inbox ends up with a boatload of SPAM in the very near future.

Regards...

Your current ownership of test directory is no good, root is not a user, root account is admin account and wheel group is a special group that gives elevated rights to its members.
Directories used by users should belong to a user and a neutral group. For instance ownership bob:test will make much more sense. Now you can deny access to everyone and add users who are allowed to access this directory to test group. Or deny access to everybody and group and allow access to bob only.

You could also check out acls for Linux (depending on your distro). There are another way to grant access to files/directories and fine tune things.
