Depends on your setup, which combination of distro/window manager are you using?

In order to help you, we'll need to know which desktop environment you are using. In the meantime, one of these links might help you.

Platform Version 4.14.8 is the version of KDE I'm on.
Isn't there a way to drag and drop app icons? or right click on an icon and "add to desktop"?...I have not seen a way to do this.

For myself, I don't know. I dislike desktop icons intensely and avoid them whenever possible. That's just me.

I'm sure someone here will be able to help if the links I provided don't help.

If it's KDE, just drag the icon to the desktop and select either "Copy Here" or "Link Here&amp" (works with Classic View of the application launcher). I can't help if it's Gnome because I don't use it.

Dragging and dropping works on my KDE - maybe you're using Gnome?

I also dislike adding icons to my KDE desktop. The only thing I have is the "folder view" of my /home/erik/ folder.

Perhaps adding application icons to the taskbar would be better? Certainly easier to get to, dont have to minimize all windows to find your desktop icon. Just an idea.

Anyway I just tested putting the VLC icon "shortcut" on my desktop and it worked by simply dragging and dropping from the Application Launcher menu. Though I'm on KDE 4.14.1, not sure if this make any difference though.

I'm on 14.13.3 and draging works both in Folder view and Default Desktop view. Are you getting any error messages when you try to drag and drop? Anything starting with
Code:
Access denied. Could not write to...

If you right click on the task bar do you get an option to unlock widgets? If you do, unlock them and try dragging again.
