Dear All,
I tried chkconfig --add mysql(i would like to start sql during the system boot). but i get the following error. " error reading information on service mysql: No such file or directory"

Dear All,

Please try the following and post the output

rpm -qa|grep mysql

then show us the cmd you use to start mysql and what output you get when you start it.

This is the command i use to start mysql # ./mysqld_safe and the output is
"Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /usr/local/var"

Mysql doesnt start automatically when i boot the system after giving the command you mentioned.

This is the output,

[root@localhost init.d]# which mysql
/usr/local/bin/mysql
[root@localhost init.d]# which mysql_install_db
/usr/local/bin/mysql_install_db
[root@localhost init.d]#

Dear,

First Check that the package is installed or not by using the command

rpm -qa mysql-server

it gives you the status of package,if the package is installed it it will shows it version number, other wise nothing is shown, when command is executed.

for installation use the following commands,
yum -y install mysql-server

for as a start up service use the following command.
service mysqld start
chkconfig mysqld on
