How to actually use fluxbox as my window manager?

After much aggravating dependency installation, I was finally able to install an old, "stable" version of fluxbox from the Debian archives. It's a version around 0.1.

The problem is, I don't know how to actually log into Linux using that window manager. How do I do it?

I'm using Ubuntu 4.10 on a PIII / 733 / 128. GNOME just runs like molasses on my computer.

I actually recommend using the current development version of Fluxbox. It is actually very stable. The current version is something like 0.9.12 (a lot newer than the 'stable' release).

In your user folder, what do you have in your .xinitrc file? Is it executable? What is in your .xsession file?

I'll second that. There's no need to use an unmaintained version *that* old. The present development version is stable. Stable enough, anyway The answer to your question can be found in the documentation, strangely enough!
