How to Acquire fiber attached tape drives without a reboot?

We have a server that we just presented 12 fiber attached tape drives. I was wondering if there is way to scan and acquire these drives without having to reboot the server. I tried hwconf, but that didn't work.

remove and reload the module for the fiber hba possibly ?
