How slackware autodetect system hardware?

when i install a linux distro, slackware 9.1 for example, all my devices works fine automatically.

In slackware 9.1, i usually install ibare 2.4.22 kernel (provided in cdrom) which has embebed code for general purpose use, but all other devices not supported in kernel core are installed too like modules.

Magically, without intervention, all my devices are configurated sucessfully but /etc/modules.conf and /etc/modprobe.conf are empty.

Now, here is the problem...

When i upgrade kernel from 2.4.22 to 2.6.3, all devices compiled like modules doesn't load automatically. I always can use modprobe command to load any modules, but that is not the question.

The question is:

How with kernel 2.4.2 and those files empty loads correct device modules and with kernel 2.6.3 doesn't load none?

I'm not sure about it, but I think that your 2.6.3 kernel is compiled without an option called "Module autoloading" or something similar. If you compile the kernel yourself, try to include that option.

"Automatic kernel module loading" is enabled but no module is loaded.

Nobody knows how slackware loads automatically the correct modules for specific system hardware devices ?

Perhaps this section is wrong for ask it ?

It's some time since I used Slackware, but if you know which modules you want to load, you could just add them to /etc/modules.autoload. It is not as cool as to make linux find the correct modules automatically, but at least it will work :)

I would have posted in slackware section, not here. Because i'm newie in this forum, i didn't know it. Now i know.
