How may I play midi files on linux?

How may I play midi files on linux? when using mplayer it just exits with "reached end of file".

I have slackware linux 10.1.

TiMidity++ is a common one with many distros.

if you have sound blaster live you can set it up to use it's own soundfonts
but if you need to use softsynth timidity can also run as a server to provide midi ports for other apps to use.
timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os

i wrote in great detail recently about setting up timidity with link to the best hard to find sound patched and junk so search here and you can find it.
