How many GB will a liveDVD need to boot Linux Mint?

So, I'm thinking about using a live DVD-RW to use Linux Mint. How many GB will it need?

sag47 01-10-2016 06:52 PM

All download sizes are typically posted on the Linux Mint download page. e.g. http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=204 is 1.5GB.

A DVD-RW generally holds somewhere in the region of 4.7Gb so you'll have plenty of room.
A mini DVD-RW can hold about 1.46Gb. :)

Play Bonny!

Can I guess we are talking about RAM? I'd guess 1G of ram memory or more.

sag47 posts the correct answer for disc sizes I think unless you mean some custom live media.

Soadyheid made me remember I have a bunch of dvd-ram mini disc's to use up.

I'm guessing he means RAM as well. Despending on the Distro and what DE/WM it is are using, you might be able boot with as little as 512MB. However to be useful I would say you will need 1 or 2 GB of memory.

I have successfully booted the Mint Live DVD on computers with 1 GB RAM. I have installed it on computers with 1GB RAM, but found it essential to install and use a light-weight desktop such as LXDE to keep it from being painfully slow.

i3, dwm WM or openbox is lightweight as well.

Yikes, they claim a 2G here. http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2653

With the default desktop environments, I'm not surprised.

There's a reason I default to Fluxbox . . . .

That may be fine for 32 bits. However I would not run a 64 bit distro with less then 4 GB of memory, preferably with 8 GB.

you should have went with this one instead:

The current release of BasicLinux is 3.50. It comes in two versions: one boots from a DOS harddrive, the other boots from floppies. Both versions have the option to install themselves to a Linux partition on the harddrive.

DOS VERSION 3.50

This version comes as a 2.8 mb zip file.
It unzips to a directory on drive C:
BL3 boots from DOS and runs in a loop file.

Minimum requirements
Intel 386 or compatible
3 mb RAM
DOS (or Windows 95/98 in DOS mode)

FLOPPY VERSION 3.50
This version comes as a 2.8 mb zip file.
It contains two files that are copied to floppies.
The floppies run BL3 in a ramdisk.

Minimum requirements
Intel 386 or compatible
12 mb RAM
two 1.44 mb floppy disks

Basic Linux was based on Slackware 4.0, and Eliminates the ole' Question of, "how do I put this on a USB Stick?"

Any hardware that old would not be even remotely useful for the vast vast majority of users out there. Anyone who is using such hardware, is doing it for bragging rights then any real use.

perhaps, but I'd still like to try in on an old 486DX4 100 just to see what it could do, That was my very first DeskTop, other then the plug it into the TV for a monitor one that was shared within the family.

Blah, life is too short to deal with such old hardware. And besides where can you buy new 3.5" floppy disks?
