how install modem?

my laptop HP NX 9005 has a M5457 Ac-Link modem and mandrake 10.2 doesn't recognize it. I downloaded the drivers from intel but I'm not able to install them. I followed the readme file "make clean", "make install" but I got an error of autoload.z... any tips? Why doesn't exist an equivalent of install.exe in linux and all the files must be compliled?

as far as install.exe is concerned then u cannot run those in linux
u can however run some of those in an emulator called WINE
but i cannot comment on its stability

there are different packages available for linux in place of .exe.files
