Usually you would do some variation on:

./configure
make
su -c 'make install'

but when you extract the tarball there should be a file called README and possibly one called INSTALL that will tell you all about what to do to install the program and (if necessary) get it configured properly.

Like normal, extract the file as so;

Code:
tar jxvf MPlayer-0.93.tar.bz2
The 'cd' into the directory that it creates and read the README. It's usually just a;

Code:
./configure && make && make install
BUT, it might be different and there might be other config options you would like to set. Just make sure you read the README.

Change the video output driver that you are using. If you're using the GUI with MPlayer, right click on the control panel and select 'Preferences'. From there select the 'Video' tab, and cycle through the video drivers untill you find one that works.
