how i get slackware and comcast ISP to work?
 

I have started linux with Mandrake 9.2 and im a complete newbie but i know this Mandrake is a piece of crap after working with it past few days. i want to put slackware 9.1 on my system but i need to know how to set up comcast cable to be gaurenteed i can get back on here and start learning the REAL LINUX please give as detailed description as possible. THANX

Welcome to LQO :)

First find out if you need software to run the stuff or if it's just a cable connection. If your connection is like mine, you should have no problem. If you don't already have a "router", you should get one. Just like a little linksys one for about $50. You plug your cable into it and then your PC into it. I am not positive but a buddy of mine is on Comcast and he requires no special software to get on the internet. It's just a raw cable connection.

Hey keeknspin! I'm a fellow Arlingtonite and I had no problem getting my slack box up on Comcast. Just installed it, set it to DHCP and away we went.

But as whitehat said you might want to look into buying a router, or atleast be prepared to lock down you ethernet connection with a firewall.

I had no problem with Comcast, either - did the same thing Netizen did (just typed in a hostname, and set everything to DHCP), and it's working great. I'm using a router, also.

Hey, another first timer using comcast here. Using topologilinux, a slackware 9.1 build. Unfortunatly, Im not a networking genius, and skipped the "setup your network" thing when first installing Linux. How do you get back to that screen?

I've searched high and low for a GUI tool for configuring the internet, but with no luck. Im switching bt/w KDE and GNOME, trying to find the right fit. Leaning towards Gnome, for its applications.

Conpen.... have you considered just having the libs for both environments installed? In that way you can install any of the applications :)

Type netconfig in a console as root to start the network setup you saw during installation.

Usually you can just boot off your installation CD and get back to the network setup. But if that is too difficult, there is a command that you can use. I am not sure what it is, the other people on the forum here can probably tell you. It seems like it is `netconf` or `netconfig` or something like that. I get confused between Linux and HP-UX, etc. I don't know if there is a GUI to do it or not.

I use Comcast cable too and run the connection through a router to 4 PC's. When I install a new distro, there is no problem getting it to work with the cable service. As long as the distro detects the NIC and enables DHCP then you are in business. If your distro does not do that for your hardware, then either find another distro that does, or find out how to compile the kernel with the modules you need.

I have recently installed Mandrake 9.0 and have the same problem, no COMCAST?!?!??!?! Those morons at comcast don't even support it.I'm a little confused withwhy they don't offer support for it.

Anywho-----------

1) Mandrake 9.0 + router=no net

2) checked internet settings DHCP

3) HMMMMMMMMM and i have a cut on my head from scratching and blisters on my but from sitting here so long.

I once had the same distro working with dsl and I was dual booting with winblows 98. I won that battle then that machine went belly up :(
it was my FIRST machine 433mhz of slow.


any ideas?????

Tronchaser, check to see if you have dhcpd installed. It's the dhcp daemon, if not install it and it should set it up for you. Atleast mine did. And make sure your router is setup for dhcp.

Do I need a router???? Can I just go from my cable modem to my ethernet card??

No you don't need a router, you can go right from cable modem too ethernet card. That's the way I had mine setup till a couple of months ago when I got my router. You might need the dhcp client installed also not sure though was about 8 months ago when I finally got comcast, so I don't remember.If it doesn't work look into that. HTH..

If you have't already been setup or registered, you have to have IE to get the servers to recognize you. Using mozilla, thunderbir, and konqueror didn't work (for the registration process when the tech guy was at the house turning the signal on). That's the only hitch I ran into with comcast.
