Welcome to LQ.

Webmail services are just clients like Mozilla/outlook etc. They just speak to SMTP/POP/IMAP services that handle the actual mail transport/retreival/storage.

Hotmail uses IMAP. Evolution uses SMTP/POP3 typically as does Lookout on typical machines. There is a difference in how the messages are passed, ie the protoco. The differences have to do with the way messages are passed across the network/internet but one thing you can count on is that all IMAP server pass messages the same way, all POP3 server serve messages the same way, etc. The protocols are independent of the application using them.
