How does one restore X backup for screwed up X server?

I was installing the newest ATI driver, and thought I had done everything right.

Restarted and X no longer works.

Id like to go back and use my backup X config from a text based approach. I can get to Ctrl+Alt F1.... but where to go from there and how to go about restoring old X setting, i dont know!

I dont know how to do that in the slightest. I am the newb master.

REDHAT 9. ATI 8500.
