how do you open a tarball in linux puppy 525

my distro is puppy linux 525. downloaded from internet a program that has a file i think is a tarbal. tto open it how do you do it. thank you

man tar will give you the various options depending on how it's compressed, but generally all you need is:

tar xf <tarball>.tar.<extension>

You should search the forums for the answer to this one. It's really easy.

cd /tarball/dir
tar xf file.tar.gz
tar jf file.tar.bz2
the extracted file will have the name of the original file without the .tar.gz, .tar.xz, & .tar.bz2 tag on the end. Just cd to that name and go from there.

In a console or terminal of your choice type in

man tar
that will give you the breakdown of how to use tar.
