How do you open a rar and zip file in Linux?

I've come across tar.gz files that are inside rar and zip files, so they have to be opened first. What's the best way to open these compressed files in Linux? Thanks.

you can use the unzip command for .zip files and for .rars you can use 7zip

Very simply with the tools "unrar" and "unzip". You probably have to install them first. There are also some gui frontend programs such as ark which can open multiple formats, as long as you have the proper backends installed.

Finally, there's a nice command-line frontend named "unp", which lets you only remember a single command in order to unpackage all the common formats.
