How do we open/run an .exe file?

Is there a Linux/Ubuntu 14.04 equivalent to MSGTAG?
We want to receive confirmations that emails we send have been opened/read. We use GMAIL.
TIA

The answer to the question in your subject is "you don't" have you tried something like the following?

I am so computer illiterate! I went to the CheckGmail site and tried to download but nothing happens. Ubuntu Software Center on my computer seems frozen.

I can't tell you why Software Centre has frozen, as I don't use Ubuntu, but I can tell you that there is no need to download CheckGmail as it is in the Ubuntu repositories. You should be able to install it by typing the following into a terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install checkgmail
You will be asked to enter your password then the program and any dependencies should be installed.

Sigh, I did all of that. Looked like it was installed but cannot get it to work. Rebooted twice to see if it needed a restart to work. Ran a system check for 45 min. That made no difference either. Giving up for today, gave me a headache. Thanks for the info.

Sorry, I'm probably suggesting things that don't work well with Unity. Try something like:
https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applicat...ise/gm-notify/
What you ought to do though is get the Software Centre working then search for Gmail there as you should find "apps" meant for Ubuntu.
