how do linux drivers work?

I've been searching all over the internet as in how to Linux drivers work. I haven't been able to find anything. I have a Linux book, I've been looking through to find a section where it talks about drivers but it doesn't really mention it but that may be cuz I've skimmed over the chapters to find the section talking about it. My problem is I can't get my wireless to work in CentOS. I found this guide and followed it but can't get it to work.

That's not so much of a problem, but I'm wanting to understand Linux drivers better so that I may be able to figure out why my wlan0 won't work and so that I can get it to work.
