How do I use scanModem for Ubuntu?

Hello,

I have just installed Ubuntu 7.10 and used the Help and Support to help me set up my dial-up connection. When I started, it said to download scanModem.gz to find my Chipset. First of all I had to go to another computer with internet to download it seeing as how I needed help getting connected. Then after I downloaded it on my laptop I put it on a jump drive and took it back to my desktop with Ubuntu. Now I am to the part where it says:

gunzip -c scanModem.gz > scanModem
chmod +x scanModem
sudo ./scanModem
gedit Modem/ModemData.txt

I do not know what this means, (I assume it is the terminal commands for opening the file) and when I physically go to my jump drive and click on scanModem it gives me a huge text file that I don't know how to use. Please tell me where I'm supposed to find my Chipset and what to do afterward. Thanks a lot for the help!

You need to open up a terminal window, change directory (with the cd command) to the directory where the scanModem.gz file is located, and type the instructions shown (they are indeed terminal commands). Once you figure out what modem you have you must find and install a driver fot, and then configure your Internet connection. This page has some further information and links.
