how do I use printer that is connected to router
 

I have a new HP Photosmart 3210 printer. I ethernet connected it directly to my DI-624 router. I get to it easily from my Win-XP PC but have not been able to set up my linux fedora core 4 PC correctly yet. Decided I need help (been working on it for the last 8 hours). I think I am using CUPS(maybe not). From the main toolbar I select 'Desktop', then 'System Settings' then 'Printing'. On the tab 'Queue Type' I select 'Networked JetDirect' and enter the hostname the printer uses (HP07fc8a) and port 9100 (could not find anywhere the port it's using but all examples I have seen indicate this would be the default port. I use hpijs as the printer driver.
The printer is controlled with DCHP and can have a different IP each time it is turned on.


I get "unable to locate printer HP07fc8a - unknown host."

Use the ip address not the host, it can't locate it.

You might need to set the router on a fixed it ( if its not already set as such)

And if it still fails the port number might be a standard one for dlink, not sure

Go into System Settings --> Printing.
-Once your in there, click add and then Forward.
-Name the printer as what every you would like and click Forward again.
-Near the top of the window, it'll ask you which "Queue Type" you want, now I've selected "Networked Windows (SMB)" and it found my printer, however if yours is not there, then play around with the different queue types and then follow the instructions.

Got it. Thanks thewonka. I selected a static IP in my router for the specific MAC address for the printer and bingo, I am printing.

cmplt-newbie, your suggestion was how I had my last printer (may it rest in peace) connected but it was hung off a windows PC and shared with the network via SMB. This new printer is plugged directly into the router.

What I would still like to know, because I like to know, is how I can set the printer to a use a dynamic IP and get to it from my linux PC.
