Unhappy how do I use NVIDIA X driver?

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 and have nvidia 7300 gt card, I also downloaded some drivers for it from the add/remove category, but i guess my card doesn't work properly because when i tried to set up screen saver most didn't work and when i go to system, preferences, display it says that "it appears my graphix driver doesn't support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's rule instead? I click yes and then it says "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server." I can't do that because when I enter 'sudo nvidia-xconfig' nothing happens. What should I do?

how about 'sudo nautilus' -- does that start a nautilus session for you as root?

If it does, navigate to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and edit the driver line to read

Driver "nvidia"

and then restart/kill/restart the X server.

Did this work?

Sasha

PS - you could probably also do 'sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf" with the same end result.

PPS - Is it possible that nvidia-xconfig DID run, and the file has been edited? Have you tried to restart X and see if it works?
