How do I use my printer now??
I just got Linux on my Dell Inspiron laptop a week or two ago. I've never used it before, totally new to it. I'm trying to type something on the Open Office program and I went to print it, thinking I just had to plug it in and connect my laptop to it and It would automatically configure it. It didn't work, I've googled how to add my printer and use my printer and honestly I don't understand what anything is saying. Someone posted a canon support page on a previous question and I checked that out, downloaded something, extracted it, and I don't even know what it was. I'm totally lost. When I try to print something it says Error, and just says generic printer. So I go to preferences > printing and it says something about the CUPS server isn't connected and I need to go to System > Administration > Services from the main menu and look for the cups service. I have no idea where that is or how to get to it. I apologize in advance, I just need someone to explain to me in plain english how I can get my printer to work please. I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 Laptop, and a Canon Pixma MP160. I have Linux Peppermint OS on my computer. Thanks in advance for ANY advice.

Or, you can try the manual CUPS printer configuration route. Here are instructions for the Debian Linux distribution, from which your Peppermint is derived. http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/per...r-cups.html.en |
Download the deb file from Linux Foundation's Open Printing
http://www.openprinting.org/printer/...ULTIPASS-MP160 Place the deb file -- openprinting-gutenprint_5.2.6-1lsb3.2_i386.deb -- where desired (for example, /home/username/Desktop/) Use GDebi pkg installer to install by right-clicking file Connect printer to computer and turn it on. Connect to internet. Open browser and type in address bar -- http://localhost:631. This opens CUPS, where you go to -- "Administration" , "Add Printer" , login, etc. |
yay... theres hope!
You guys rock! Thank you! I'm gonna try this. I went to Menu > and my choices are Run, Software Manager, Firefox, Preferences, System Tools, Sound & Video, Other, etc. When I go to preferences theres a long list but nothing that says administration. And When I go to System tools it just says task manager. When I go there, it just shows what my computers running at that time. Am I over looking something?

Click on System, Administration is the second line down.

I don't have that. I wish I could do a PrntScrn and show you guys what I'm talking about. I don't know if I'm explaining it right. When I click on Menu, in the bottom left of my screen, it pops up and looks like this...
Accessories > Education > Games > Graphics > Internet > Office > Other > Sound & Video > System Tools > Task Manager (nothing else) Preferences > A bunch of things, theres one that says printing, and thats where I go when I say it won't connect to CUPS. thats where I mean. I think thats where I need to be, it just wont let me connect to CUPS for some reason. Then after that the only other options in my menu list is... Fire Fox Software Manager Run Logout |
On the menu bar you should have Applications,Places & System
Click on System |

no sir, I guess the guy that installed this for me changed it or peppermint is different. I'm not sure. Heres a picture of what it looks like when I click on my Menu.

So Right there on the menu where it says preferences > if i go there and then go to printing, a little window pops up. I go to server > then connect > a little window pops up about connecting to localhost and it doesnt connect.

Try right clic on menu bar and edit menus, if that appears enable administration tab and also printer.
|
In cups admistration you can set printer as default.
|
A person may have to go Menu => Preferences => Printing, and delete all printers, logout then login and start over to get it installed properly.
BTW, for screenshot, go into Terminal, and PHP Code:
