how do I use bittorrent?

I am wanting to try out bittorrent to download a new distro, but I can't figure out how to get it to work. I went to the Download Linux area, went to bittorrent downloads, and downloaded a couple files. They are slackware-10.1-install-d1.torrent and slackware-10.1-install-d2.torrent. Those don't look like iso images since they are only 50K each.

So now what do I do with them? The filetypes are not recognized by the system.

You need a bittorrent client to download the files. There are many clients (built in Java, C, C++ etc). One of the more famous ones is Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net).

Read this article to know about bittorrent and various clients.

Once you download and install bittorrent client, you'll have to open up your .torrent file from within that BT client and it'll start downloading your ISO.
