yes, rpm stands for RedhatPackageManager, but many distros have adopted the format like suse and mandrake
suse uses rpm format to package software, and yast does nice things for you like resolve dependencies.
check in yast to see if it's installed, i don't think you're going to need the latest 3.* version. check for linneighborhood too, it is an easy-to-use gui for browsing the network.
