How do i update the kernal on Mandrake 10.1

I have checked out google, and must be tapping the wrong stuff..

I have just ditched fedora Core 4 for Mandrake 10.1 for no other reason than i wanted to give another distro a try.. Nowt wrong with Fedora, just trying to increase my linux awareness.. now on fedora i was running Kernel 2.6.11.... when i type uname -r into the command line i get back 2.6.8.1-12mdk

Now searching the web tells me that i need to run

urpmi kernel

To update the kernel, which i did and well got back 10 options all of which are still back at the 2.6.8 variety.. and i would live to update to at least 2.6.11 basically because i have the newer Nvidia Drivers and a Wifi Card to install (both of which will need to be changed each time i update the kernel... )

So my question is could someone point me in the right direction, on instructions on how to update the Mandrake 10.1 kernel to a more recent version

In FC4 i could run Yum to update the kernel, can i do this with mandrake? does Yum run on mandrake?

Sorry to be a pain..

Mandrake 10.1 comes with kernel-2.6.8 and Mandrake backports any important security and bugfixes into updates to it (which is why you see only kernel-2.6.8 in the list to updates). This is the same as Fedora Core 4 comes with 2.6.11 (the latest is 2.6.13 at kernel.org) and Fedora backports bug fixes and security patches into it. Neither distro will ever have the latest kernel unless you download and compile the source for it from kernel.org.

Mandriva 2005LE (the latest publicly available) has 2.6.11and Mandriva 2006 (just released, but only to club members ATM) has 2.6.12. There should be nothing wrong with 2.6.8 and you can certainly get your Nvidia drivers working on it. Unfortunately you'll still have to reinstall the Nvidia stuff if you get a one of Mandrake's kernel updates for it, even though it doesn't change the major version number. Newer Mandriva distros have DKMS which solves this problem, I'm not sure if its only for the club versions though :(
