How do I update my video driver?

Installed an ATI Radeon 9550 onto Mepis v6.5.02. Apparently, I need to download and run the fglrx (official 3D) driver and edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file then reboot. Only problem, after the reboot all I get is a blinking command prompt with something like tty02: . Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks.

After installing fglrx you should make aticonfig --initial to modify you xorg.conf properly.

If the problem persists may also help to check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/fglrx-install.log files to see if any errors have occurred. The ati drivers can be awful with installation. For example, they require the kernel headers to build the driver module, but if these are not present, the installation continues anyway with no error messages.

aticonfig --initial
Also, ensure to run this command outside of X (ctrl-alt-f1), otherwise it produces errors (see topic:
