How do I unmute my computer?

My husband installed Linux on my computer about 2 months ago and ever since my computer has been stuck on the mute setting and I can't unmute it. There doesn't even seem to be a volume option anywhere on my computer. I am very bad with computers so I might just be looking in the wrong place. Can someone please tell me how to make it work again??

in a root terminal, type alsamixer
Go to each channel in turn. M mutes/unmutes them. Set levels
esc or alt-Q to quit.
Immediately run alsactl store

Have you tried asking your husband to fix it?

If you have a volume mute key on your keyboard try pressing that. It may or may not work but it takes about a second to find out.

business_kid's solution is probably a good general solution, though it does involve use of the command line which might seem scary for someone completely new to Linux.

You might get more accurate suggestions if you tells us what version of Linux you are using (Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, other) and which Desktop Environment (GNOME, KDE, other). GNOME or KDE should both have a volume control on screen by default.
