As nuka_t suggested, if you're using KDE, ksnapshot is an excellent choice. Most likely it can be found in Utilities > Desktop > Ksnapshot. -- J.W.

Its possible that your configuration isnt using a hardware acceleration layer, ergo your screenshots will capture the video frames correctly.

Hmm, looks like I was wrong. I had to use xine to get a snapshot - both ksnapshot and imagemagick's import command produce either a transparent or totally blue image in mplayer for me.
