how do i successfully compile a driver? (in the generic sense).

hi,

i've had problems following howtos and understanding peoples answers when they tried to help me compile drivers (ie savage 3d and zd1211 usb wifi).

i'm wondering if someone can explain to me the issues involved, or if there is a clear document somewhere that will help.

to clarify, as i understand it the process involves:
-download and untar source
-follow instructions in README or elsewhere
-probably 'make,' 'make install' or something like that
-recompiling my kernel?
-?

i'm just wondering what are the things i have to make sure i do, like
use gcc 3.4 not 4.0 ?

i am willing to learn, i actually used gcc for arm on my xp box before, i just don't know much about linux.

at this point i would like to understand more than just get these 2 drivers working.
