how do I setup a Linux distro and how do I connect to a ASDL modem for braodband?

I have installed a number of different distros and currently have a Hard Disc dedicated to Mephis. I need help to setup an asdl modem so that I can connect to my broadband ISP Tscali. My problem is that I know absolutely nothing about this or any other distro configuration.
Can anyone point me in the direction of good handbooks or other sources of information so that I can get up and working both with the distro and the internet?
If anyone can suggest a simply and easily understood distro, other than Mephis, it would be appreciated.

There are several howtos but knowing the make & model of your modem is necessary.
There's a general guide here: http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-HOWTO/DSL-HOWTO.html
It's probably better, though, to do a search "adsl modem <your model> linux".
For distros that may be easier to get working/ease of configuration-try pclinuxos or suse. Check www.distrowatch.com or just do a search on those names.

To have any hope of helping you out, we need to know more about the hardware you are using to create the connection. Is the ADSL modem just a modem, or is it a modem/router? If you can post the make and model.

How is this device going to connect to yoru system, ehternet, usb? Do you have all the necessary information from the ISP? On the ISP side, is it DHCP or a fixed IP address?

For the most part it is not all that hard to configure once you have all the informaiton.

Simple to understand distro? Mandriva, Ubuntu and I'm sure there are more. Mandriva has some "Wizards" for configuring ADSL.

Many thanks for your kind responses.
I am currently using a Sagem Fastex 800 modem (not router/modem) through ethernet cable but intend to go to a modem router with desktop on ethernet and laptop on wireless.
The fact that Mandriva has "Wizards" to configure ASDL is useful. I have asked for a Ubuntu distro but will now look for a Mandriva distro.
Thanks again for helping a complete novice.
Regards,
Geoff.

I used to have that modem with tiscali, it was absolute junk, i've got a d-link router/modem now and it works perfectly, no special configuring in Linux (well, IP etc, or it can use dhcp).

Also i'd advise you not to mention to tech support you are using Linux OR a different device to the sagem, they are the most clueless tech support ever and all you'll get is "we don't support that" or "Linux doesn't have the internet"
