How do I set the home page for website visitors on a fedora 8 server?

I was asked by a client to prep his newly acquired dedicated server, and load his website on it. I setup successfully SSH and FTP users, but when going to the site on a browser, I cannot get to any page at all. It sends me to some default search page with various connections available with somewhat related names. I created a /var/www directory and placed a test index.html file in it. It does not find it. What is it I am doing wrong or not doing? Thanks for the help.

I'm surprised you had to create /var/www directory. What does your Document Root show in the httpd.conf file of apache? Many systems set this to /var/www/htdocs. My Fedora Core 6 has /var/www/html.

Did you start apache? /usr/sbin/apachectl start

What are the pages you get sent to? Usually you just get a page saying "IT WORKS:

Thank you for your help. It works now. I did not have apache configured properly. Your reply put me in the right direction.
