How do I select multiple files in a directory?
 

I am trying to upload a range of files from an SD card to the cloud. I can access the directory that the files are on, but of course when I click on a file, it opens. (They are jpgs.) If I right-click, I get the menu. In Windows I select one file, hold down the shift key and use the up and down arrows to select a range of files. How can I do the same in Linux?

cp -r DIRECTORY ADDRESS

Works the same way in "Linux". What distribution and window manager are you using?

I suspect the problem here is the wonderful "single click to open" setting. There should be somewhere in your system settings to turn it off labelled something like "double click to open". I'm sorry I can't be of more help than that but it's been a while since I've had to turn it off. Typing something like "double click to open gnome" (replacing gnome with your desktop environment) into Google ought to find the answer.

Actually no, it does not work the same way. If it did, I could simply click on a file to select but not open it. Using Puppy Linux (Tahrpup) I click on a file and it opens.

I looked through the settings in the mouse/keyboard wizard and did not see that option. FWIW, I'm using Puppy Linux (Tahrpup).

Actually yes. It's working here like that. It's not a question of Linux doing differently than Windows, it's a question of setting it the right way. In Windows there is a setting too which opens files on single click.

some desktop managers default to "open on single click " others DEFAULT to "open on double click "

as per Windows and apple and every OS and Desktop i have used
hold down < shift> to select a RANGE!!!
hold down < control> to select individual files

the same solution to the SAME problem is normally the same in different environments

a car ignition key is the same ( mostly) on all cars
a tire air nozzle is the same on most tires
and so on

I have to admit that, coming from Windows, the single-click to open was something that really annoyed me about Linux. I soon worked out how to turn it off but to me it will always be a weird choice that I haven't seen as the default in Windows yet.

I do not aware of Puppy's behaviour, but in KDE to open a file you have to click on file name. If you want to select it without opening you have to click on file icon, not a file name.
Maybe the same for Puppy, worth to try.
