How Do I revert Back To An Older Version Of Firefox Ubuintu 10.04?
 

Hey Guys...

My philosophy is generally "Dont upgrade anything if it still works good"- but the other day, I decided to upgrade Firefox to the latest version- 11- (Since I no longer use Chromium, due to Google's intrusive ads/tracking and new policies)...and the darn thing crashes about 50% of the time when I start it!

How do I revert back to either my old version of Firefox (3.x) or something at least older than this 11 garbage?

I think it's time for you to change your philosophy, software is updated for a reason. Is your copy of 10.04 that out of date as well? As well as being a security risk, your just making life harder on yourself. Update Ubuntu will all available updates, PURGE Firefox, not remove, double check that your firefox in .config is gone, if not delete it yourself and re-install the current version. THEN see if it's crashing. I doubt you'd find a copy of 3.x, there would be no point to keeping it around. Also, I'm not sure on this but I don't think Google's spying affects Chromium, just Chrome.

Thanks, but I see no need to constantly update stuff, when it does what it's always done/what I want it to do, just fine the way it is. My mistake was in upgrading Firefox. I think this whole "security" concern as a motive for upgrading is a ruse- in fact, the more outdated one's OS is, I'd say the less the risks, because even if you find people who are trawling for Linux users, they're probably more apt to go after those with current systems....and the updates probably contain things that facilitate security breeches- like you mention about Chromium...may be true, but much of the spying through web browsers is done by Flash player...thus, even now, just using Firefox and Ixquick search engine, I'm still getting the same targeted ads I was getting with Chromium/Google.......

I'll likely just find a browser that I will like better than Firefox and install it and delete FF. Sorry, but I'm not going to jump on the constant update bandwagon....I updated 10.04 once, in 2010..... I'm the guy who was using WIN98 until 2008......

Better yet..this may be a good time to make my jump to Debian.....eh?

Ubuntu 10.04 is a LTS release and it will get update at the end of April to 12.04 LTS. I am still using 10.04 too but I will upgrade once the new LTS is out for the masses.

And I know you are not asking for web browser suggestions but you should try Midori. Like you I have become concerned about privacy and the performance of Firefox has been going down with the latest releases at least for me.
So just do a and forget about Firefox and Chrome

Well, guys.....I deleted Firefocks and updated my Ubuntu (O-K...I was due...)...reinstalled Firefox 11...and......it was even WORSE- totally un-usable- it'd crash within 2 secinds of opening it.

So I figured I'd try some other browsers....and I thus downloaded Seamonkey; Dooble; Epiphany and....Midori!

So far, Seamonkey seems be quite a good replacement for Chrome- and even works with the Ebay selling form- something a lot of browsers have trouble with when it comes to the upload pictures page (which is why I had kept Firefox around- as it was one of the ones that worked, where even Chromium didn't)

TroN: I also like Midori so far- but couldn't import my bookmarks from an HTML file saved from Chromium (Firefox and Seamonkey had no prob with it, but weith Midori I get a "not formatted correctly" or some such error message)- Any ideas? Seems like it would be a good browser for everything except Ebay.

Haven't tried the Dooble or Epiphany yet...but will tomorrow.

And what is this?! When I updated my Ubuntu, I had to agree to some EULA BS...something to do with MScorefonts...from MICROSOFT!!!! How did MS get into Linux?????

I swear, they making life so hard (especially if you want to maintain your privacy/control) that one of these days, I'm going to give up 'putering!

3.X can still be found, and if you are using a distro with currently updated firefox 3.X (eg debian 6.0, CentOS 6.2) it should be jsut as secure as more recent frefox versions.

Google spying affects anyone who uses google services. As far as Chrome vs Chromium goes, there is less to worry about (no auto-updater, no RLZ tracking). IMO if someone is worried about google, using Chromium is just sily, using Chromium helps google.

There is a reason why there are security updates for OSes, browsers, etc.. The older your system is without security updates, the more likely there is some critical vulnerability...and that the vulnerability is known to exist, etc..

There will be an option to update to 12.04, but support for 10.04 will continue for another year (til april 2013) for desktop use.

I wouldnt upgrade to 12.04 in april 2012. There is always people that have serious trouble upgrading early in the release cycle. Better to let someone else deal with the early upgrade issues. Even then, Sumguy might not want to do it...moving from gnome 2.X to unity or gnome 3 has left many users running around looking for a way to get gnome 2.X back.

+1, up to 're-install the current version' (unless you meant 're-install the current version from the ubuntu 10.04 repos'). Why bother with firefox 11? 10.04 is up to 10.0.2 now-

10.04 will probably get 11 at some point, if you keep it updated.

Two things:
1. In your case, Canonical decided to deliver some fonts that are copyrighted by Microsoft. Therefore you have to agree to their EULA. If you don't like that just uninstall the Microsoft fonts. It is your decision.
2. Microsoft is a major contributor to the Linux kernel. If you really want to get rid of Microsoft on your system you have to run a custom kernel with all Microsoft contributed drivers disabled.

Well, fellers, I solved the problem by installing Seamonkey and Arora (Tried a few others- but these two seemed to work the best for me).

Cascade9, I'm with you! I wouldn't dream of being the guinea pig who upgrades when something is brand new! I tend to stick with old things that work, until absolutely forced to switch. (Heck, I was still using WIN98 years after MS stopped supporting it!)

I'm planning on switching to Debian one of these days.....

Never knew that MS had any involvement in Linux/Ubuntu- Just can't seem to get away from the MS beast, can we? (Much like Ebay owns 25% of Craigslist). Oh well...as long as it works and I don't have to put any money in their coffers......I can live with it.
