How do I remove Linux?
 

Well guys, it's been fun but I'm done with Linux. I've worked steadily for the past 2 months to get my system even close to doing the same thing my Windows 98 does but have had very little success. When I've asked questions on here people have been very quick in responding, but I haven't managed to fix one of the many things not working in linux. Please understand i'm not bitter, but i'm not willing to spend 45 minutes of my life to get a simple chat program working that takes about 15 seconds to install in windows.

Anyway i'm using mandrake 9.1 and I would like to remove it without affecting my windows drive so is it just a matter of formatting the linux drive? When I boot a menu comes up asking what operating system I would like to run. Is this on my windows drive?

To remove the boot menu - boot from your Windows 98 floppy and type in fdisk /mbr

To remove Linux - do same as above but type in fdisk, then remove the partitions. Reboot and format the partition.

Shame you are going, did you try urpmi to install your programs?

I think i'll hold out a week or so to do anything drastic, I think I'm just a little ticked off right now cause my flash drive locks up my computer in linux. Can't really blame linux for that though. If only companies made hardware that was compatable with linux :-P

Urpmi is similar to apt-get - you simply set up your sources and while connected to the internet simply type in (as root) urpmi <program name> and it will go off, download it, install it and create a menu item.

Go to EasyURPMI to set up your sources.

Also, in a console, type in man urpmi for info.

just delete the linux partitions, and then run the fdisk/mbr from the windows 98 cd or floppy.......... and all things again back to windows :D

I was a windows user since win3.11.( up to win2000 )
when I started with linux, I also sweared at it, for same reasons as you do now.
Then I decided to spend some time on learning it.
I never have regretted it.

Yeah i'd really like to get it working, i've put alot of time into it so far. If anything its alot cheaper than windows :)

Marq - once you get the hang of a few basic commands and where things are, life will get much simpler. Mandrake is one of the more newbie friendly distros. There are lots of wizards and the already mentioned (and now legendary) URPMI makes life much much easier. If you are unsure of how to use a command, the included man pages will tell you. Just open a console and type, for example man urpmi (or man <command name>) and it will give you a pretty detailed explanation and help file.

don't leave marq!!! i'm a newb too...and it's taking some time but i'm getting used to linux. i started with redhat, ended up with suse which i totally love. the command line stuff and figuring out tars and rpms is a pain, but trust me, once you know how to do them...it's a breeze!!!
i'm taking my time, cause i realized it took me awhile to figure out windows, too...especially with every new os that they put out...i started with 95, ended up with xp (which i dual boot with linux...) but one day i'm pretty sure i'll be strictly linux.

is urpmi available for suse, too, or just apt-get?

SuSE uses apt-get and YAST. URPMI is a Mandrake specific tool.

hmm well I tried this Urpmi thing with several different programs and each time it says "No package named <whatever I typed in>" Any ideas?

Firstly, did you add all of the sources from easyurpmi - as root?

Secondly, which packages are you trying to install? Rather than doing urpmi mozilla1.51 or whatever, just try "urpmi mozilla" urpmi will then list all of the programs that have the word mozilla in them.
