You might want to check out this info from the Sound How-To:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO/x504.html#AEN611

And a list of some available programs are at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/apps/sound/recorders/!INDEX.html

what I did

The only prob I have been having with fc2 is the ability to record sound with my mic. I like to record conversations with my kids in the morning -- surfing for tiger pictures...dancing ;all that...

anyway -- I have been unable to until now.

I run fc2.. love it. But I wanna record with my mic -- I opened up my etc/module.config file and noticed what to me looked like a conflict...by the way, I have nforce2...
here's my file pre-change:
===============pre-change=====================
alias eth0 forcedeth
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0

alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 ohci-hcd
alias char-major-195* nvidia

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
alias char-major-195* nvidia

===============post-change============
alias eth0 forcedeth
alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

alias usb-controller ehci-hcd
alias usb-controller1 ohci-hcd
alias char-major-195* nvidia

alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
alias char-major-195* nvidia

======================================

You will see that I removed what to me looked like a conflict -- whether it was or wasn't now I can record using gnome's sound-recorder. I use it in KDE. Also what might be important is the setting at which I am able to record. You will notice that you can choose between 3 recording settings:
cd quality, lossless
cd quality, lossy
voice.

I tried all three pre and post my change and none worked pre, and the only one to work post was the cd quality, lossy.

I do notice that when I open the sound-recorder, I must goto the mixer setting and tick rec under microphone, for some reason this will NOT stay ticked. Also, In the mixer settings ...well, see the pic:
here

I have one sound card and it looks like OSS and ALSA running. I don't know how to correct this, or even if it's a problem -- in windows this would've driven me nuts as I ran stripped down for function only. I'll do that in linux when I'm ready.

So, I hope this helps to solve a problem for some. Forums are frustrating and this one is NO different.

I don't know about mp3record but I use arecord and running
Code:
man arecord
from a command line tells you how to use it.
