Question How do I name this box?

Ever since I applied the sanity transformation (dropped Windows and started using Linux :-) I have been having trouble sending email to one specific domain. After digging into it, it turns out the problem is that my machine is configured with the default machine name. ("local" or something like that.)

Apparently a lot of spam filters consider this to be highly suspect, so they are rejecting my email. Now all I have to do is name my machine and the problem should go away.

The machine itself is just a workstation in my home network. I'm not a part of any real domain (other than that of my ISP). Can somebody point me to a primer on the politics of naming computers, and the technical how to, once a name has been chosen?

By politics of naming, I'm not refering to family disputes over whether the machine should be called Homer or Bart. But I want to know such things as "do I need to worry about a domain name?" and "is there any need to coordinate the Linux machine name with the Windows workgroup name?" and things like that.

Thanks,
Jefficus

Workgroups come into play if you're running Samba, and you can config that from there.

On some systems you have some weird restrictions (my router won't let me have spaces, for example) but generally anything should be okay.

IE: The computer I'm on is "Dark Flame" but my router only sees it as "Dark"

Of course, according to Red Hat Network I'm dhcppc1.

Yeah, I knew about the Samba nuances, but wasn't sure if workgroup names might play a role in other areas. And I wasn't aware of the "space" issue in the name. I'll watch for that.

So how does one actually create the name for the box?
