How do I login to the terminal as someone else?

Howdy all! I am a super newbie, as you will see. How do I login to the terminal as someone else? For instance, I need to be connected as someone other than root, but when I open the terminal it uses my root credentials, and I need to switch it. This is in CentOS4x.
