How do I keep ShoutCast from knowing where I am?
 

Hi all,
A question in the newbe setion, because - somewhere deep - we're all really noobs :)
Anyway...when I start a channel on ShoutCast, it gives me LOCAL ads, and, I dont want that...
How do I keep ShoutCast from "knowing" my location?

Your IP address. You can't hide it.

Wrong. You can hide your IP address. A quick google search turns up lots of ways.

I dont want to hide...just...(call me certified) but foreign ads (American to name one) can me more entertaining than the ones here in belgium...the ones I have to "endure" on a daily base at work ;)

Agreed, and what that sums up to is the use of a VPN provider to decouple your geographical location from the advertisers. However is not another part of this, the fact that there are advertisements in the first place? Because now won't you just get ads tied to the geographical locations which the VPN provider gives to you. I guess I'm unsure if the total problem also isn't that you are getting ads.

Ah, they're not as good as what they used to be when I was growing up. ;)

Well, tha ads are not really that much of a problem, just...different ones, please.
If you've heared that ad about the mobile TV ad the first time, it's cute (has singing kids in there)...after a dozen times...it wears off...

I knew these ways, but with free proxy it will be a pain. They are overloaded, so your stream can die any time. The only option is to have a friend to set up a private proxy or pay for a commercial proxy if you can find one.
The second way - to use neighbors wireless - is no help, the ads will be still the same.

These ads come from different servers, you probably can get rid of them by using privoxy - while still using your own IP address.

If the ads come from known servers, you can block them in your hosts file. No need to do anyting more complicated than that.
I have something like that. Main drawbacks are: a couple of sites aren't build to work without ads (i.e. some video players that try to insert ads during the video), and some sites are advertisements (limited-time promotional stuff).

Here's an excellent pre-configured ad-blocking hosts file. Its maintainers update it from time to time, but it may need some tweaking for your locale.

I have used it for years, generally by editing my real live hosts file to include the list of blocked sites.

I still think using privoxy is less trouble, I run it in my router to serve whole LAN.
