How do I install software from the DVD on to a different partition

I have 2 hard disks in my system (Mandriva 2000).
I have managed to format both.
When I install software from the DVD, it always seems to get installed on to the first disk (hda?).
I'd like to be able to install to the 2nd disk but can't find any information on how to do that.

I've tried the Draxtools doc and the How To's doc to no avail.

I've also tried to find out how to go about it using man but I'm afraid that it's far too complicated for me at present.

Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated

If replying to my email, please remove the xxx

Many thanks

Depending on a) what type of software installation method and b)
the desired location for the package (either the maintainers or
your own choice, depending on binary or source) you'll commonly
find that software ends up under one of the following directories:
i) /opt
ii) /usr

To get software onto your second hdd at least one of those directories
will have to be a mount-point there.

if you have no /opt on hda, you can create one on hdb then put a symlink on hda that points to the opt on hdb, to wit:

assuming you already have a mount pt for some partition on hdb, say, /mnt/b,

mkdir /mnt/b/opt2
cd /
ln -s /mnt/b/opt2 /opt

now, when reading/writing to /opt, you're really reading/writing to /mnt/b/opt. "opt2" isn't a reqd name, you can use anything.
