Using Manrake 10.0 Could someone please give me detailed instructions on how to install software? In windows it was easy by just clicking on it, but I am trying adjust to Linux. The only think that happens by clicking it is, I am asked what program I want to open the file? should I have a separate installer software? Do I have to install by script building or is there a way it can run by itself? I have searched for these answers but have not found clear answers. I could use all the help you can give me. Thanks HELP I AM SOOOOO LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Let us know what exact app you are trying to install, filename and all and you will get help. If I knew what you were working with I would download it and check it out. There are 20+ different ways to install apps in various linux distro's, so no real way to guess ;)

well since your using mandrake it should be a snap
i cant remember exactly but theres a "software management" program somewhere in your menu (start button) its under system or something like that. then its as simple as selecting an app and clicking install |
urpmi
I think urpmi was the default package management system for Mandrake. If you can use that, it should be easy to install software listed in its default repositories. Zinf is a pretty goog audio player. As, of course, is mplayer. If all you want to do is play mp3's, you could use something as simple as mpg123 or mpg321. Mandrake doesn't have other options for audio players, like rhythmbox?

If you are using KDE, you should try JuK. I loved it in my KDE days. So, in order to install it, you should hit the command line, su to root and enter
Code:
urpmi juk It is possible if you have not used this before, that the only program sources the system knows is the installation CDs. In that case, you will have to add the download mirrors. This is done best by following the instructions at EasyURPMI. |
You people Rock! thanks a lot. I will have to give that stuff a try the bad part is I am working to damn much to play with Linux right now. Will post once I get a chance. Thanks again.
It sounds like simple fix I might have just been a bit overwhelmed after the install. |
