How do I install open source drivers for my AMD graphics card?

I am using Linux Mint 13 cinnamon.

I recently installed the proprietary AMD drivers for my HD6870 card, except they didn't turn out too well (black screens/hang on bootup). I managed to remove them using the provided fglrx-uninstall script by fiddling around in the recovery console.

The system booted and X started properly, but the problem is that I am now left with what seems to be no video drivers installed - the proprietary ones must have overwritten the open source (default) ones. The screen resolution is very bad and there is no 3D support.

How should I go about getting the original open source drivers back on? Just so you know, the "additional drivers" never seems to work for my card, the system hangs with a black screen when I reboot. I would just like to have the default drivers back on.

Thanks for any help,

Sorry everybody, my mistake, there was nothing wrong with the drivers at all!

The problem was that I, in my attempt to fix the "black screen" at bootup, put "nomodeset" into the kernel parameters line in /etc/default/grub. I had forgotten to remove this parameter after I uninstalled the proprietary drivers.

Moderators, you can remove this thread if you wish, or leave it up here for anyone else who may be having similar problems.
