How do I install fedore core?
 

Hi Everyone, I must say you're running a good forum here.

I'm completely new to Fedore Core. I have no idea how to install it.

I have a 20-GB Hard-Drive which has 2 equal partitions. I have Windows XP on Drive C and some backup files on Drive D.

I want to install fedora core on Drive D. Will it automatically remove all the existing files?

Can anyone give me detailed step-by-step instructions on how I can create a (/) partitons or swap partition. I have no idea what this means.

I tried installing it on my PC, using the graphical interface, but when it comes to the partion part. I chose Druig-sumthing and I didn't know what to do.

Is it possible to install fedora if I have about 4 GB free space? I have 128 mb RAM and 500 MGHz processor. Is my computer too old for Fedora?

I am guessing my Fedora Core is the latest (that's what my friend said).

Any help would be appreciated.

No, you get to choose 3 options
- Remove all Linux partitions.
- Remove all partitions.
- Keep partitions as they are.

You can make the installation set the partitions automaticly, I'm not sure if it can resize current partitions on the drive so it can fit on it or not. It probably can though..

Fedore Core 2 is pretty heavy comparing to other distros, I don't think that computer is good enough, speacialy on the RAM part, but most other distros would work on it I think, but I'm pretty new to this my self though, this is just what I have read. =)

So you want to install Fedora Core. Fedora Core 2 is the latest. It's should be better for you to install Fedora Core 1 your configuration, at least I had it installed on the same configuration before I upgraded my PC.

If you want to install it on your partition D, you have to get it lost first, so all your data will be lost. That's because Linux uses the EXT3 Format and not FAT32 like Windows. If you do this, I think you'll get more than 4 GB free space [about 10]. You could install it with 4 GB too, but you have to save your backupfiles somewhere, create another 6 GB partition and save it again there. That's your option...

First you have to loose your partition D. You can do it with fdisk command in MS-DOS or you could just delete it from the installation of Fedora.

For the install steps:
You boot with FC1 cd#1, get in graphical mode, and you get to the partition part. There you can delete your partition D [if you didn't do it in MS-DOS]. Just click on it and delete.
Then you have to create the Linux partitions. I'll give you my configuration because I have a the same HDD size for Linux [9 GB].

/boot - 100 MB
/usr - 3.9 GB
/home - 2.6 GB
/usr/local - 1.7 GB
/ - 1 GB
SWAP - 256 MB

To create them, just click on the free space and create new partition, there you choose EXT3 format and the partion [/, /boot, /home,...] for SWAP you choose instead of EXT3. You will find all options, that's not so hard.

Then you will be asked for the boot-options...select Fedora, then firewall.
You'll soon come to the package selection, there you should choose a graphical interface. Since you have very poor space choose KDE or GNOME, not both [it's up on you]. Other Packages...what you want to have installed. You will be asked for a root-password, that's the same like administrator on windows. This account shouldn't be used, only if necessary.
After all packages will be installed you have to reboot without cd's. Now you have to complete another steps, that's easy...when asked for a username and password be sure to remember them because you will use them every time you want to log-in to Linux.

Now everything should work fine!

I think I can make 10 GB free for Fedora, and is it okay if I buy another 128mb and make mine 256? Will that be okay to run fedora on?

I think it should run with 256 RAM pretty good.
KDE and GNOME are two desktop enviroments. OK, it's up on you witch one to install. Some people like KDE, some like GNOME. I use KDE.

yeah you should really get to 256+ memory for fedora core 2, it can use up to 200 on just the operating system. memory though is inexpensive, check cruical.com
